Video Transcript for Let’s Check Out the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II

Randy: Hey guys, Randy here at etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Blue Ox line of hitch immobilizers. Now, these work out great in a lot of situations. Any time you're using an accessory in a receiver tube opening and it doesn't have an anti-rattle device on it, basically you get a lot of movement. Especially with cargo carriers, we get a lot of side to side movement, that weight transferring back and forth. Now before we get to the installation process, let's take a look at some of the test course footage before and after. Essentially, before we get this installed, you're going to see this cargo carrier move side to side quite a bit.

We've got it loaded down with about 120 pounds. That's when we're doing the slalom. As we go over the bumps, you'll see this back end tip up quite a bit. Now, the cargo carrier's going to have a little bit of that anyway, but we're eliminating all of that from the shank, so it keeps everything much more stable. Now you'll see in the after-footage, all that side to side movement is completely eliminated. Once we get into the bumps, you can see there's still a little bit there from the actual cargo carrier tolerance, but we've got nothing coming from the hitch. Now regardless of whether you're using a 2" hitch or 2-1/2" hitch, or what we've got installed here going from a 2-1/2" hitch with an adapter to a 2" accessory, they're all going to work the same way.

This part with the key stock comes in on the backside. Then this U-bolt you can see, as we tighten that down, it pulls down on the accessory. This U-bolt pulls over. That's going to lock it right into the side of our receiver tube opening. Especially when we're using adapters like this, there's so much slop in that system, everything moves side to side.

You can see it's nice, heavy duty steel construction with a black powder coat finish. Blue Ox always makes good products. Then we've got the zinc-coated U-bolts. They use locking Whiz nuts here. As we get everything tightened down, we really don't have to worry about it coming back apart.

Just does a great job in getting that set. The 2" by 2" version looks identical. This is the 2-1/2 by 2-1/2. Basically, it just takes all that discomfort and all that play and that movement out of the equation so you don't have to deal with it anymore. Now another option's the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch. This one, where the Blue Ox doesn't have an 1-1/4" fit, does have an 1-1/4" fit. Has a 2" and a 2-1/2" fit. Basically, this one, this loop goes down around the hitch. This bar is going to come down and press down on the item. Now I like this one quite a bit. On really heavy loads, on your really heavy trailers, or in really heavy flat tow setups, maybe you're hauling a 1500 4x4 Ram, it gets pretty heavy. This one only eliminates the up and down. It eliminates most of the side to side, but as items get really heavy, there is still a little bit of transfer or a little bit of motion side to side. I really like the Quiet Hitch. I think it does a great job. But for total containment, I think the Blue Ox is just a little bit better. Now for all of immobilizers, the installation process is going to be the same. This is the one that fits the 2-1/2" hitch down to a 2" product or 2" accessory. You've got the small lips here. It's going to sit in behind the lip of our hitch. We want to bring it right out to the edge of it. We've got a U-bolt that's going to go in this way. Place our nuts on there. Then we've got our U-bolt that's going to come in from the top. Same thing, throw our nuts on there. Now we want to grab a 9/16" socket and we're going to start tightening these down. It's going to help to pull over on the shank and also pull down on the shank just to help us ensure that we got a great hold on them. Now we're going to grab our torque wrench, want to get all four of those torqued down.As you guys can see, this takes care of a very common problem that we have. I really like this one. I like that it has the total containment on both sides. Really helps to eliminate that movement we experience. I think if you're having that issue or if you've got heavier items that you're loading up and you can feel that transfer, I think it's a great idea to pick one up.

  • Anti-Rattle for 2018 Ford F-150 With Cargo Carrier Carrying E-Trike
Hey Steve! What kind of e-trike do you have? I would get the etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar for 2" Hitch Receivers # e38FV over other options. The Blue Ox # BX88224 is pretty similar to what you have now but with an extra U-bolt. It also has a tendency to loosen up over time like others with the same design. Even if the etrailer Anti-Rattle loosened up (I don't expect it to) all you have to do is turn the knob to keep it nice and tight instead of messing with nuts and bolts. Also,...

  • Troubleshooting Flat Tires When Towing Mini Cooper With 2011 Holiday Rambler
First, before flat towing your 2011 Mini Cooper, be sure the tires are filled to the recommended psi and in good condition. More importantly, be certain your steering column is not locked; if your tires are unable to turn they would wear out quickly. If you think your safety cables may be an issue, and yours are shorter than 7', an option would be the Blue Ox Blue Ox 7' Safety Cables # BX88197. Another thing you could do is add an anti-rattle device such as the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer...

  • How to Reduce Hitch Play When Using a Hitch Extender for a Cargo Carrier?
Hello Randy, Yes, when using an extender, having that extra piece will definitely cause quite a bit of play. I’m curious what kind of anti-rattle device you’re using now? You’re absolutely right to be looking at the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer. It’s one of the best options for tightening things up since it uses a 2 U-bolt design to secure everything really well. If you have a 2-1/2" receiver on the back of your F-250 and are using a 2" adapter, you’ll want the # BX88312. If you...

  • Best Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier For Offoad Trip
Hello Sandy, thanks for reaching out. We do have cargo carrier options that can go offroad. For that you will just want to avoid any of the folding carriers, since the folding portion would be a weak point. A fixed carrier will be much better for offroad. For that, I recommend the Reese 60x24 Hitch Cargo Carrier # 63153. This will work with any 2" hitch, and it has a 500 lb capacity. Since you will be offroad, I recommend also using the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer # BX88224 to help...

  • How Tight Should Nuts of Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II # BX88224 be
Hey Maurice, Blue Ox doesn't have a torque spec recommendation for the U-bolts of the Immobilizer part # BX88224 that you referenced and instead they just state to "tighten the whiz nuts firmly". Which if like me you didn't know what a whiz nut is...it's a flange washer that is serrated on the bottom to resist backing off. So basically using standard hand tools just get them tight and you'll be good.

Hey Eric, thanks for the picture! The etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar item # e38FV is not going to fit but I have one that will. It is the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer II item # BX88224. You're receiver doesn't have the necessary gap behind the lip but the Blue Ox one does. The Blue OX item # BX88224 works differently. Please refer to the linked review video showing use of this anti-rattle item. Brophy Hitch Reducer and Extender - 2-1/2" to 2" Trailer Hitch - 6" Long Item # HR26 is at a fixed length no matter if you are strictly reducing or are also extending. It only has the 2 sets of pin holes; one set to pin the adapter into the hitch and one set for the accessory in the end of the adapter. There isn't an anti-rattle locking hitch pin that works with a solid ball mount or other hitch accessory. You can use a regular hitch lock and then an anti-rattle device separately. For a lock for a 2 inch Class III trailer hitch you can use # e98880. For an anti-rattle device you can use # RM-061 which reduces movement vertically. Or you could use # BX88224 which reduces movement vertically and horizontally. I have linked videos of both devices for you.

  • Extension for Hitch Receiver to Allow Trailer Towing with Truck That Has Slide-in Camper
We do offer hitch extensions in various lengths to fit 2-inch and 2-1/2-inch truck hitches. These are shown on the linked page. The issue with hitch extensions is that they typically cause a loss of hitch capacity, a 50-percent loss! This happens due to the additional leverage applied by the extension to the hitch tube. This is much like slipping a pipe over the end of a tire iron to give you more leverage to loosen a lug nut. For this reason very long extensions such as the 60-inch TorkLift...
